Operation - Single Cartridge

The motor shaft is driven by the rotor. Vanes, closely fitted into the rotor slots move radially to seal against the cam ring. The ring has two major and two minor radial selections joined by transitional sections called ramps. These contours and the pressures exposed to them are balanced diametrically. Light springs urge the vane radially against the cam contour assuring a seal at zero speed so the motor can develop starting torque. The springs are assisted by centrifugal force at higher speeds. Radial grooves and holes through the vanes equalize radial hydraulic forces on the vanes at all times. Fluid enters and leaves the motor cartridge through openings in the side plates at the ramps. Each motor port connects to two diametrically opposed ramps. Pressurized fluid entering at Port A torques the rotor clockwise. The rotor transports it to the ramp openings which connect to Port B from which it returns to the low pressure side of the system. Pressure at Port B torque's the rotor counter-clockwise. The rotor is separated axially from the sideplates surfaces by the fluid film. The front sideplate is clamped against the cam ring by the pressure, maintains optimum clearance as dimensions change with temperature and pressure. A 3-way shuttle valve in the sideplate causes clamping pressure to equal the pressure in Port A or B, whichever is the higher. Materials are chosen for long life efficiency. Vanes, rotor and cam ring are of hardened high alloy steels. Cast semi-steel sideplates are chemically etched to have a fine crystalline surface for good lubrication at start-up. |

Operation-Tandem Cartridge
| The M4DC fixed displacement vane type motor is a tandem unit capable of two-speed or three-speed operation in converting hydraulic forces into rotary mechanical motion. Four basic configurations are available: | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| The
basic 4-port motor is available as an externally drained (M4DC) or internally
drained (M4DC1) unit. This tandem motor utilizes the Series M4C end cap and
cartridge, and the Series M4D cartridge and housing. Four porting options are available: End ported SAE 1" 4-bolt-SAE 3/4" - 16 UNF drain port End ported SAE 1" 4-bolt-BSPP 1/2" drain port Side ported SAE 1" 4-bolt-SAE 3/4" - 16 UNF drain port Side ported SAE 1" 4-bolt-BSPP 1/2" drain port |

Operating Speed Range
M4 motors can be used successfully in applications where the motor must start smoothly at full load. These applications include hoist and swing drives. This smooth start characteristic is due to the inherent high starting torque efficiency (typically 85-95% of running torque). The high starting torque efficiency allows the motor to start at full torque without pressure over-shoot and the accompanying jerk. To fully realize this smooth start characteristic, the designed maximum operating speed for single cartridge motors should be above 1200 RPM. For optimum operating efficiency and life, minimum continuous operating speeds should be above 500 RPM, at differential pressure higher than 2000 PSI. |

Replenishment Pressure
| The inlet port of the fluid motor must be supplied with replenishment pressure as listed below to prevent cavitation during dynamic braking. These pressures should be multiplied by a coefficient of .06 for M4S motors used with fire resistant fluids | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Minimum Replenishment Pressure
| Replenishment pressure for tandem 2 & 3-speed motors must be provided during periods when the motor is dynamic braking, shutting down or coasting. It is necessary to back pressure the motor discharge port to these pressures when the motor is operating in the high speed mode and the non-working cartridge is at low pressure. Pressures listed above are for maximum displacement cartridges. Smaller cartridges require lower minimum pressures. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
